Romania at the International Conference on Nuclear Security – Commitments and Actions

State Secretary for Strategic Affairs Dan Neculaescu attended on 5 and 6 December the International Conference on Nuclear Security - Commitments and Actions, organized by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna.

According to a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE), the State Secretary has underscored the role that the Conference has in keeping the nuclear security issue on the agenda of IAEA member-states' leaders.

"State Secretary Dan Neculaescu evoked the risks associated with nuclear terrorism, illicit trafficking of radioactive materials and cybernetic attacks, that require an increase in states' vigilance, as well as in the degree of cooperation between the member-states of IAEA. Furthermore, he reconfirmed the importance that Romania attaches to the implementation of engagements assumed in the process of the Summits on Nuclear Security and emphasized the donor status of Romania at IAEA Fund for Nuclear Security. (...) He also expressed support for the role of the Agency in Vienna in consolidating the global framework in the area of nuclear security, and coordination of activities in the area" the press release shows.

Dan Neculaescu evoked, also, "the active role at the regional level which Romania has in the nuclear security area', the most recent activities organized by our country in this regard being the Olympus Regional Exercise (Bucharest, 19 -21 October 2016) and the regional seminar under the auspices of the Security Initiative in the area of Proliferation (Bucharest, 16 - 18 November 2016).
