Ambassador Jinga underscored Romania’s continuous commitment for peacebuilding and welcomed the convening of the World Bank – PBC meeting, taking into consideration that one of Romania’s priorities at the PBC Chairmanship, in 2018, was strengthening the partnerships with the financial institutions. He stated that “the World Bank and the United Nations have common objectives, addressing crisis-related challenges and the activity of the two institutions is complementary and interdependent”, considering that in the context of the current threats to international peace and security, the interlinkages between the UN’s development, security and humanitarian pillars, as well as conflict prevention should be the central elements of the cooperation between the two organizations.

The Romanian diplomat touched upon the opportunities generated by the tripartite UN – World Bank – United Nations cooperation, underscoring that one of the priorities of Romania’s mandate at the PBC Chairmanship was the Sahel region: “During Romania’s Chairmanship at the PBC, the Annual meeting of the Commission was dedicated to the Sahel region and the joint meeting ECOSOC – PBC discussed the linkages betweenclimate change and challenges to peacebuilding and sustaining peace in the Sahel”. Sharing the experience of the visits he conducted in his capacity as PBC Chair in the Sahel region and in West Africa, he highlighted the importance of intensifying the cooperation between the PBC and the World Bank, through strategic and operational exchanges in support of the African continent.

He also welcomed the preparation of the World Bank Strategy on Fragility, Conflict and Violence, to be launched this autumn, as well as the opportunity to collaborate in a pragmatic manner with the PBC in implementing this analytical and programmatic framework: „The time of fragmented approaches has past. The UN and the PBC have to use the process of peacebuilding architecture review in 2020 to increase the cooperation with the World Bank for peacebuilding and achieving the sustainable development goals”.
